My name is JP Whitaker and I'm a full stack developer based in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have 11-years of experience at startups, an advertising and marketing firm, and an industrial research lab. As someone living with Celiac disease, I'm particularly excited about Fig's mission. While I don't see an opening that completely matches my skill set, I see a lot of overlap and wanted to reach out to explore potential fits.
As a software engineer and now someone personally invested in allergen safety my head is swimming with ideas I would love to see in Fig. Having worked in several startups I know that you have kanban boards full of features and enhancements yet to come, and I would love to help you realize those goals.
I've contributed to startups from early stage to series C, shaping and implementing products. My experience ranges from high-level work with founders, designers, and end users to hands-on feature implementation and bug squashing.
During my time at Boatbound (think AirBnB for boats) we built a double-sided marketplace for boat owners and renters. I built onboarding flows for both owners and renters, a fine grained search and filter page, a messaging and booking flow, and also a feedback rating system post rental. I also worked on AB testing, drip campaigns, and data dashboards for our market managers.
At Podcat, a database for podcast guests, I created a search feature that in between page loads would download and cache podcasts not currently in our database, making a seamless experience for the end user even if the podcast had not been indexed yet. I also developed automated host and guest tagging, and implemented a manual review queue for Amazon's Mechanical Turk. I streamlined the flow with fuzzy typeahead and keyboard shortcuts to allow Turkers to quickly and accurately tag podcast episodes.
Finally at Ubiq, an Encryption as a Service B2B, I implemented multitenancy features and designed an easy-to-understand interface for the complex task of defining format-preserving encryption parameters. I worked closely with the encryption team to identify what information was required, and built out interfaces to break up, simplify the process, and provide immediate feedback to prevent users from entering invalid data.
There's so much more to talk about, but to keep a long email from getting longer, I'll wrap it up. I'd love to chat with you further and find out what's on the horizon for Fig, hear about your stack, and see if I could be of service. My past work in startups often involved roles that had fuzzy boundaries and I often wore many hats. With my background and firsthand knowledge of the challenges you're trying to solve, I think I'd make an excellent contribution to the team.
Hope to hear from you! - JP Whitaker
